World of modern Dance

By the late 1920's, three women had changed the shape of American modern dance: Helen Tamiris, Martha Graham, and Doris Humphrey.
Tamiris rebelled against ballet. She was a political rebel, as well. The daughter of Russian-Jewish immigrants who settled in New York City, she was born Helen Becker in 1902. Her father, a tailor, made policemen's overcoats in sweatshop. As a child, Helen studied "Interpretative Dancing" with Irene Lewisohn and Blanche Talmud, and when she was fifteen she joined the Metropolitan Opera Ballet; she also studied ballet with Michel Fokine. Society Dance - Salsa

Salsa is not easily defined. What is Salsa? A sauce, a recipe, a dance? Who invented salsa? The Cubans, Puerto Ricans? Salsa is a distillation of many Latin and Afro-Caribbean dances. Each played a large part in its evolution. Salsa is similar to Mambo in that both have a pattern of six steps danced over eight counts of music. The dances share many of the same moves. In Salsa, turns have become an important feature, so the overall look and feel are quite different form those of Mambo. Mambo moves generally forward and backward, whereas, Salsa has more of a side to side feel. Read more about Salsa Dancing .

Tango

Tango dance and tango music originated in the area of the Rio de la Plata, and spread to the rest of the world soon after. Early tango was known as tango criollo, or simply tango. Today, there are many tango dance styles, including Argentine tango, Uruguayan tango, Ballroom tango (American and International styles), Finnish tango, and vintage tangos. What many[according to whom?] consider to be the authentic tango is that closest to that originally danced in Argentina and Uruguay, though other types of tango[which?] have developed into mature dances in their own right. In 2009, Argentina and Uruguay suggested that the Tango be inscribed onto the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists and in October of the same year UNESCO approved it. Read more about Tango

Electronic music dance

Electronic dance music (EDM) is electronic music that is produced primarily for the purposes of use within a nightclub setting, or in an environment that is centered upon dance-based entertainment. The music is largely created for use by disc jockeys and is produced with the intention of it being heard in the context of a continuous DJ set; wherein the DJ progresses from one record to the next via a synchronized segue or "mix". Electronic dance music is a broad set of percussive music genres that largely inherit from the electronic music of electropop groups such as Kraftwerk and YMO as well as 1970s disco music. Such music was originally born of and popularized via regional nightclub scenes in the 1980s. By the early 1990s, the presence of electronic dance music in contemporary culture was noted widely and its role in society began to be explored in published historical, cultural and social science academic studies. It is constructed by means of electronic instruments such as synthesizers, drum machines and sequencers, and generally emphasizes the unique sounds of those instruments, even when mimicking traditional acoustic instrumentation. It sometimes encompasses music not primarily meant for dancing, but derived from the dance-oriented styles. Read more about Trance
Disco / Funk Dance style
Disco is a genre of dance music. Its popularity peaked during the middle to late 1970s. It had its roots in clubs that catered to African American, gay, psychedelic and other communities in New York City and Philadelphia during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Disco was used as a reaction by New York City's gays as well as blacks, Latinos and heterosexuals against both the domination of rock music and the demonisation of dance music by the counterculture during this period. Women embraced disco as well, and the music eventually expanded to several other popular groups of the time. In what is considered a forerunner to disco style clubs, in February 1970, the New York City DJ David Mancuso opened The Loft, a members-only private dance club set in his own home.[18][19] Allmusic claims some have argued that Isaac Hayes and Barry White were playing what would be called disco music as early as 1971. According to the music guide there is disagreement as to what the first disco song was. Claims have been made for The Doors 'The Changeling' (1971)[citation needed][dubious – discuss], Manu Dibango's "Soul Makossa" (1972), Jerry Butler's "One Night Affair" (1972), the Hues Corporation's "Rock the Boat" (1974), George McCrae's "Rock Your Baby" (1974). and "Kung Fu Fighting" (1974) by Biddu and Carl Douglas.[21] The first article about disco was written in September 1973 by Vince Aletti for Rolling Stone Magazine. In 1974 New York City's WPIX-FM premiered the first disco radio show. Reall Full Text about disco music and dance
